The NCHRD-U Condemns Threats Against Human Rights Activist Dr. Jimmy Ssentongo.

In a statement issued by the National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Uganda (NCHRD-U) on Thursday, 21 March, 2023, the coalition said the threats, are only aimed at silencing voices advocating for accountability from duty bearers, justice, equality, and human rights.

“We express grave concerns over threats directed towards Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, as he recently explained on his X (formerly Twitter) account. These threats and intimidation are only aimed at silencing voices advocating for accountability from duty bearers, justice, equality, and human rights,” the statement read in part, adding that the actions are not in line with the fundamental principles of democracy and rule of law.

The coalition also reiterated its commitment to protect all human rights defenders in the country, saying the work of human rights defenders is not only a constitutional duty but also a moral obligation to all Ugandan citizens.

“As a coalition committed to protecting all human rights defenders in the country, we vehemently condemn any attempts to intimidate or harass those dedicated to the noble cause of those promoting and protecting human rights. Such actions not only undermine the rights and freedoms enshrined under Article 29 (1) (b) of the Ugandan constitution and the International Human Rights Conventions but also pose a significant threat to the fabric of Ugandan society,” the statement read
