(Kampala 5th April,2021). The National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Uganda expresses its deepest sympathies with the Catholic Fraternity, bereaved family and colleagues at the sudden loss of the Archbishop of the Kampala Catholic Archdiocese Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga. Ordained as a priest on 8th April,1978, Dr Lwanga served religiously until 19th August 2006 when he was appointed the third Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala and was installed as the third Archbishop of Kampala on 30th September,2006 at Rubaga Cathedral, succeeding Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala who resigned. A position he has held till his passing.
An ardent social justice proponent, Dr Cyprian Kizito will be remembered for his outright stances on issues of rule of law, social justice. He is most recently quoted saying, “Let us resist bad politics and promote national unity because we are all interested in Uganda and also to build a strong future for this country”. His burning heart, deep knowledge, liturgical competence, and capacity of sharing gifts and friendship, made a great difference in his service. His memory will live among us for a long time.
On behalf of members of the National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Uganda, Management and secretariat staff we convey our most sincere sympathies to the bereaved’s family and the diocese at large. We pray for God’s peace and comfort at this very sad time.
